Acai Berry Allergic Reactions
Acai berries and nutritional products made from these berries can be very beneficial to your health. But, like every other food, there are some people who can have allergic reactions as a result of consuming acai products.
Fortunately, allergies to acai berries are relatively rare, and are usually mild. In most cases, mild acai berry allergic reactions can include a slight rash, itchy and watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, or mild gastrointestinal issues. However, it is possible that a person could have a severe allergic reaction as a result of consuming acai. In these cases, allergic reactions could include vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal pain, dizziness and mental confusion, or difficulty breathing or swallowing due to swelling of the throat, resulting in a medical emergency.
If you are known to be severely allergic to pollen, or have had allergic reactions to grapes or blueberries in the past, you should start by taking a very small portion of acai at first, to make sure you do not have any reactions. Checking with your physician before taking acai berry products is also a good idea if you already know you are highly allergic to pollen or any foods that are similar to acai.
Additionally, if you already suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or have any other serious digestive problems, you should consult with your doctor before beginning a regime of taking acai berries. This is because the natural cleansing abilities of the berries and products made from them will cause your bowels to become more active. While this is normally a good and healthy side effect from taking the berries, it could cause problems for those who suffer from digestive issues.
For most people, taking acai berries is not only perfectly safe but also highly beneficial, due to their high level of antioxidants. A good practice is to start with a small amount of acai. Then, gradually work your way up to the recommended daily amount as a safeguard against any possible acai berry allergic reactions.
