Are Neutral Shoes Really That Versatile?

Loosely defined, neutral shoes are black, white, and varying shades of brown and gray. There is a hot debate about whether or not the browns and beige count as neutrals, but we are not going to go into that today. We are going to work off the premise of an inclusive definition of neutral shoes.

The question is: are neutral shoes really that versatile? The answer is yes, and no. There are definitely right and wrong ways to wear neutral shoes. For example an all black outfit with white shoes will not look proportional. Your shoes will stick out like a sore thumb. However, if you add a white clutch and over sized white pearl necklace, your outfit is balanced and stylish.

There is a myth, as another example, that black shoes do not go with pastels. If you are wearing a baby blue skirt and a spring yellow blouse, then go with beige shoes over black shoes. However, if you also have a baby blue blazer with black buttons, carry a black handbag and wear those black pumps with pride. You will look great in the outfit.

The idea behind neutrals is that they really can go with anything. That is basically true, but you have to work with them. You can’t just throw them on with any old mishmosh of clothes and think it looks good because you’re pairing them with classified neutral shoes. You want a balance of light and dark when you are considering what neutrals to choose. If your outfit is made up entirely of darker shade, do not go for a light gray shoe; choose black or dark gray instead. You want the shoes to flow with the entire ensemble in both shade and tone. There will always be a good, better and best option, so you will have to decide based on what is in your closet.
