Can You Eat Fried Foods When Dieting?
Fried foods has gotten a bad rap in the weight loss world mostly because its deemed unhealthy and can detail your weight loss effort. Well, its not entirely true but it’s not untrue either. The short answer is yes, you can eat fried food while trying to lose weight but its not the best way to cook your food either. However, with some basic guidelines like the oil you should use to fry your food you should be fine with eating fried foods once a while even when you’re trying to lose weight. Before we continue, we must define fried foods. By saying that fried food is allowed I’m not saying that every fried food is allowed when you’re trying to lose weight. Carbohydrate based fried food is not allowed at all. Example of carbohydrate based fried food is potatoes, donuts, chips and many more I won’t mention here. (I trust you can detect these foods easily enough, a hint: they’re not meat)
With that said, you must also learn how to fry your food so that it doesn’t get oxidized and you retain its nutrient. You also need to use the right oil, which I will go into later. Here’s how frying works, first of all when the food touches the hot oil, the steam and moisture inside heats up and cooks the food from inside out. It’s important to keep the right temperature because if its not hot enough the oil will seep into your food and causes it to be greasy and gross. If it’s too hot your food will be dry and your oil will be oxidized. Both scenarios don’t look too good. What is the perfect temperature to fry your food then? 350°-375° is generally a good rule of thumb.
The next thing to know is what kind of oil to use. The important metric here is the smoke point, where if you heat up your oil beyond the smoke point the oil will chemically deteriorate and become toxic. The oil I recommend is animal oil such as tallow which has a high smoke point of 425°.
