How To Deal With Extreme Fear Of Driving

One of the most common fears that people suffer from is the fear of driving a car. Although this fear comes in different forms like the fear of driving over bridges, in tunnels, at night, in rain, in busy streets, freeways and intersections to name but a few, they all are the same thing and often bear the same symptoms. Some people experience fear for no apparent reason, it is not uncommon to find some who get panic attacks even when they sit on the passenger seat. It is very unfortunate to suffer from the fear of driving as this can tremendously affect so many factors of a person’s life including their personal, social and professional lives. People suffering from the fear of driving often resort to avoidance, choosing to stick to their neighborhoods and walking distances instead of facing their fears and overcoming them.

Some of the common symptoms of fear of driving are shaking, sweating, shallow breathing and hyperventilation, dizziness, tunnel vision and in extreme cases seizures. There is no known cause of the fear of driving but most people who suffer from it acknowledge that they had been involved or witnessed a near-miss, accident or accident in the past, especially during childhood. The main reason most sufferers choose to suffer in silence is because the condition is always not taken seriously and people take it as a joke or cowardice.

You can overcome driving phobia and stop being afraid of driving through a very simple procedure. First, you have to admit that it is a problem that you need to deal with and open your mind on ways to deal with your fears. Avoidance and denial never work, neither do anti-depressant and anti-anxiety pills that people are used to. Effective remedies involve convincing the mind that the fears are irrational and nothing bad will come out of driving.
