Jiffy Bags – That Esteemed Red Logo

A good product withstands the test of time, and Jiffy mailing products have done just that. We see them and use them all over the place, most commonly in the office for mailing documents and shipping small items.

Jiffy has been around for many years – decades, in fact. We’ve had lots of time to become familiar with that bright red oval surrounding the word Jiffy, their very recognizable logo. But Jiffy first became widely used when floppy disks were rising in popularity as the medium of choice for storing and transmitting information. It became necessary to have a way to ship them without damage. Sealed Air Corp., having invented bubble wrap by way of founders Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding, acquired Jiffy Packaging Corp. in 1987 and put the two products together, producing a mailing envelope that was bubble wrap lined.

As you can imagine, the choices for Jiffy bags wholesale or retail, for shipping, is wide and varied. The classic envelope is still available, as is its bubble wrap lined cousin. Plain white or kraft gold are standard colours. Books are best shipped using their rigid-backed mailers. For applications that are delicate or weight sensitive, envelopes also come in extra lightweight. The self-sealing mailer is great. Peel off the wax paper uncovering the strip of glue on the flap, and you have a sticker. Just close the flap and press down the strip of glue, and your envelope is sealed.

We question the reasoning behind the term Jiffy bag, considering they do not resemble, say, organza bags, or any type of bag at all, really. Despite that, as far as we can tell, Sealed Air Corp. is definitely the originator of Jiffy products in the United States. However, in other countries and markets, the UK in particular, several companies claim also to produce the Jiffy brand. It is likely that companies in those territories have purchased an exclusive license to produce Jiffy products in their areas.

Where can one get their hands on Jiffy packaging, envelopes, and the like? Companies need only look to their local office supply distributor to order what they need in bulk. Individuals will find what they’re looking for in the neighbourhood stationery shop.
