OshKosh B’Gosh is a children’s clothing and apparel company, founded in 1895 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. When it was first founded, however, it didn’t seem destined to create clothes for children. In fact, the clothing manufacturer started out as a supplier of adult work clothes catered to the working and middle class of the time. Over time, they decided to create other items, which included children’s overalls. When the original children’s overalls that were made in the early 20th century, which were designed so the parents can dress their kids like their dads were made, however, the company stumbled upon something great, though at the time, they did not immediately know of it yet..
Soon, they began creating more children’s clothing. But when their signature overalls were featured in Miles Kimball’s national catalog in the 1960s, sales increased, paving the way for OshKosh B’Gosh to appear on the map. This popularity and improvement in sales allowed OshKosh B’gosh to begin selling their clothes in many outlets, which included department stores. They also expanded their line to improve upon their signature clothes, in order to accommodate more children. During the end of the 70′s, the company’s children’s clothing products comprised 15% of OshKosh B’Gosh’s sales, but by the early 90′s, the number already reached 95%, essentially turning the company into a children’s clothing company. Poor sales of clothing for adults caused the company to cease their production, totally focusing on children’s clothes instead.
Today, while OshKosh B’Gosh doesn’t make their clothes in Oshkosh, Wisconsin anymore, the company still continues their tradition of creating trendy and fashionable children’s clothing. In 2005, the company was sold to Carter’s Inc., however, they retained the company’s original name, and maintained the original corporate headquarters in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Their products range from everything between jeans, shirts, sweaters, and their signature overalls, for babies, infants, toddlers, and kids between 4-12 years old. Their products are sold in over 100 stores and outlets in the U.S., and are exported to many countries worldwide.
Parents looking to get some of the best clothes for their children would do well to choose OshKosh B’Gosh, for its history, tradition, and overall dedication to children’s apparel.
