Things to do when you go away on holiday
Most of the time we go on holiday at the time for fun and relaxation, for getting away from things and forgetting about the stresses of everyday life. The one thing that we certainly do not want when we get back is to find a way of being a victim of crime. It’s important to take a few simple steps before we go to avoid this terrible situation when we return. Any recuperative effects of a holiday are soon lost in such circumstances.
Tell the neighbours you are going. There’s nothing like having neighbours keeping a night out for you. No outdoor home security cameras are as good as substitute is a real person’s eyes looking out for your interests.
As well as the obvious things like locking all of your doors and windows the biggest key to making your property secure while you’re away is to make it look as if you are someone else our home. To this end stop any deliveries you might have a groceries or newspapers. Ask someone to collect your mail. There’s no bigger sign that someone is a way if a pile of letters starts to accumulate in the mailbox. And if you completely trust them you can always give them a house key and ask them to look in on the place from time to time.
A house sitter is the ideal solution but failing that it’s worth investing a few dollars in some electric timers to turn lights on and off automatically. It’s also a good idea to turn the radio on and off too. Sometimes these are quite sophisticated and let you vary the time they come on and go off so that they do not get activated at the same, predictable time every night. An all-in-one motion sensor alarm can be a cheap way of getting half decent alarm system. These self-contained units can detect an intruder within a certain range and sound an alarm. Although not as good a deterrent as a full home alarm they also only cost a fraction of the price.
