Top 5 myths about Pilates practice

Pilates is a great exercise to do. But unfortunately with all the myths out there about Pilates, lots of people are skeptical to practice Pilates. This leads to people missing out on a fantastic exercise experience. That’s why I am writing this article to bust some of the Pilates myths and to encourage you to get over your preconceived notions about Pilates in order to be able to true benefit from Pilates.

1. Pilates practice is limited to the super fit

If Pilates practice was only limited to the super fit, then it wouldn’t be such a popular exercise. Pilates can be practiced by every one. Regardless of race, gender or age – every one can do it, as long as you don’t have any serious injuries of that sort. And as Pilates makes one so flexible, you will be super fit from regular practice anyway.

2. Pilates practice is only for women

Pilates practice is very popular with women particularly, but that doesn’t mean that it is limited to women only. Lost of men are also practicing Pilates these days and are enjoying it immensely. Emphasizing the fact that Pilates is not confined to one specific gender – if you can exercise you may practice Pilates.

3. Pilates doesn’t involve weight training

This myth is on the one hand true but it is also false on the other hand. Let me explain – yes Pilates usually don’t use weights, but resistance is used in Pilates practice. Resistance in the form of resistance springs, tubes, bands or rings act on the same ways as what weights would do and thus have exactly the same effect.

4. You have to be flexible to practice Pilates

Flexibility would be an advantage, but it is not needed in order to do Pilates. With regular Pilates practice, you become more and more flexible. So you don’t need to be flexible because you will eventually become flexible with regular practice.

5. Pilates is not a proper workout

Pilates can be just as hard as any other exercise. And as it tones and tightens the whole body and also strengthens your core, it is in all manners a proper workout. Any one who says that Pilates are not a proper exercise probable hasn’t done one Pilates class.
