Fiberglass inground swimming pools are popular because they are so durable and can be eye catching when they are properly maintained.
The most common minor problems that affect fiberglass pool have to do with discoloration due to stains or algae. This minor stains can be easily remedied by a trip to your local pool store. There are many products available which will clean the stain up and the sales associate should be able to point you to a good one. There is a more serious type of stain referred to as cobalt bleeding. These are large black stains. Most stain removers will only temporarily fix the problem, and in this case it is better to just refinish the pool – which will have it looking as good as new in no time.
Although fiberglass pools are durable, cracks and chips do occasionally occur. Both of these problems can also be remedied at a pool supply store where grout and plaster is readily available. Just be sure to match your purchase with the original color of the pool.
However, for those DIY people out there, be careful if your pool as a large crack or you are planning on resurfacing the pool. Both of these projects require the pool to be drained. If a fiberglass pool is drained completely it can cause more severe cracks do to the pressure of the earth surrounding the pool. In this case it is best to at least consult with a professional to ensure that you don’t damage your pool beyond repair. However, if done correctly, even these major problems can be fixed restoring your pool to even better than new condition.
