Understanding the Geese More Than Just Using Your Goose Call

To understand what the goose meant with their sounds, focus your attention to its body posture and action. These 2 are very important part of their communication. Hunters wanted to command the flock to come nearby. Of course the only way to lure these fowls is to learn how to talk to them. Mimicking their body action would be very hard and next to impossible when it comes to getting their attention. The best way would be to liken their sound.

To understand them better, Dr. Cooper mentioned about its significance to its frequency and intensity.

When we talk about frequency, it refers to how many times a goose call in connection to its motion. It was observed that the more rapid the goose move, the faster they also create a sound. With lesser movement on the ground, it connects to its family by doing a slow goose call. However, upon flying, it makes a sound every time it exhales, that is when its wings do it’s down beat strokes when it contracts its muscles and chest. Hence when flying in formation, the call is slow. But as the wings pups rapidly during take off and landing, the calling is faster.

On the other hand, intensity refers to the loudness of the call made by the goose. This time their mood plays a very big factor. Overtime you see them gets irritated, excited or nervous, you will notice that they produce louder noise. This happen when a goose is attacking another goose, during mating, landing or taking off.

The pitch and the length of the goose calls are also dependent on the size of the goose. The bigger will be its body size, the deeper will be the sound and shorter the individual notes. The Giant Canada for instance has a long, low pitched herr-onk; while the call of a small Cackling goose is short, high pitched unc.

These realizations make us understand why hunters must be very keen with their observation when they are out in the field. They must not rely on their impulsiveness to aim and fire but must invest a lot of time in observing. Scrutinizing these fowls starts even before the hunting season starts. The more often you try to connect with these birds, the greater will be the probability for you to understand what they would like to convey with their sound. After all, blessing comes to those who wait. And when you wait real good as you observe these flocks action and sound, you will reap a reward of a bountiful harvest.
